Homework becomes a task with a price on it

Reward Study's study generator turns Math practice into a task like any other: pick a topic, an age band and how many questions, and the child earns credits for finishing it. Math is organized into 19 topics across four packs, with three age bands per pack and sets of 5, 10, 15 or 20 questions each.

The problem

Why does homework need a price on it at all?

"Homework is a daily fight" is one of the eight problems the app asks a new parent about on the very first screen, and it is usually the most immediate one. The fight is rarely about the subject. It is about the fact that homework sits outside the system a household already uses for everything else: chores get a value and a checklist, but a worksheet just gets nagged about.

Pricing homework the same way as anything else removes the separate argument. Twenty minutes of Math practice is worth a set number of credits, approved the same way a made bed is approved, and it stops being a fight about school specifically and becomes one more task on the same list.

It also solves the setup problem underneath the fight. A parent who wants to add extra Math practice on top of what school assigns still has to write the actual questions, or hunt down a worksheet online that matches what the child is working on that week. The study generator removes that step: the questions get produced on the spot, matched to a topic and an age band a parent picks in a few taps, rather than a page a parent has to go find first.

How is Math actually organized?

Math is the only subject organized into packs, each one covering a related group of topics with three age bands labelled by school age rather than by difficulty. There is no Easy, Medium or Hard here: a parent picks the age the set is meant for, not a guess at how hard it should feel.

  • Math Basics, ages roughly 9 to 13: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Missing Number, Number Sequences.
  • Fractions & Decimals, ages roughly 12 to 15: Fractions, Percentages, Decimals, Ratio & Proportion, Rounding & Place Value.
  • Shapes & Measures, ages roughly 10 to 15: Triangles & Angles, Perimeter & Area, Units & Measures.
  • Pre-Algebra, ages roughly 13 to 16: Order of Operations, Negative Numbers, Squares & Roots, Two-Step Equations, Factors Multiples & Primes.

Across all nineteen topics, the youngest starting point is age 6, for Addition and Subtraction, and the oldest is 13, for Two-Step Equations. Every set can be sized at 5, 10, 15 or 20 questions, so a five-minute check-in and a full practice session use the same generator, just a different number typed into the same field. Triangles & Angles is the oldest of the nineteen, shipped back in version 1.5; the rest of the topics, the pack structure itself, and the measured age bands are all new in 2.0.

The three age bands inside each pack exist so the same pack keeps working as a child grows, rather than being swapped out for a different one every year or two. Fractions & Decimals covers a child from roughly 12 up to roughly 15 without switching packs partway through, and the age band a parent picks inside it is the only thing that changes, not the topic list itself.

What actually happens when a set is assigned?

A parent picks a topic, an age band and a question count, and the generator produces that many problems along with their exact answers on the spot. The set becomes a task like any other: it carries a credit value, the child marks it done, and it waits in the same approvals queue as a made bed or an emptied dishwasher.

A finished set can also be printed on paper, with the answer key or without, so it can be marked by hand and the score recorded against the same task; worksheets with or without answers covers that in full, and it is one of the features gated to a Pro subscription, alongside the story-style word problems that some of these same topics can wrap themselves in, described in story word problems.

Once a set is approved, it does not just disappear into the ledger as a generic task. The progress card widens to track Math accuracy specifically, alongside the weekly bars, the comparison windows and the since-start totals it already keeps for every category, so a parent can see whether a child's Math sets are actually getting more accurate over time, not just whether they are getting done.

Beyond Math

What about the other subjects?

Math is one of four subjects the generator covers; Physics, Chemistry and Biology exist alongside it, organized differently, more like the chapters of a schoolbook than a set of packs with age bands, so a parent can pick exactly the chapter a child is actually being tested on at school that week. They get their own detail in Physics, Chemistry and Biology by chapter rather than here, since the two systems work on different logic and neither one benefits from being squeezed into the other's explanation.

What the research says

Does turning practice into a priced task actually work?

Across 28 classroom studies, earning tokens for good behaviour had a strong effect, and it worked a little better for ages 6 to 15, according to Soares, Harrison, Vannest and McClelland, 2016, in School Psychology Review. That finding is about token systems generally, not about Reward Study or about Math practice specifically, and it sits alongside the app's own note that these studies looked at the approach, not at this app. It is still the closest evidence to what a priced set of Math questions is actually asking a child to do: finish the work, in exchange for something recorded and real.
