The problem
Why does pocket money cause more arguments than it settles?
Pocket money causes arguments precisely because it usually is not attached to anything. A flat weekly amount gets handed over whether the week was good or not, which teaches nothing about effort, and a negotiated amount gets argued over every single time, which teaches even less. Either way, the conversation about money becomes a conversation about fairness between siblings, not about the work itself.
A credit only solves that if it eventually turns into something real. Otherwise it is just a second scoreboard sitting next to the first, and a child old enough to want actual spending money will notice the gap between the number on screen and the coins in a pocket.

What does a credit actually mean to a child holding one?
Inside the reward shop, a credit already has a fixed meaning: the three starter rewards seeded at setup are priced at 25 credits for an ice cream treat, 60 for a movie night and 150 for picking a new toy. A child can compare those prices to each other without needing a parent to translate anything.
The credit value setting extends that same clarity outward, into money a child can actually hold. Once you set what one credit is worth, the app can show a running total in your own currency alongside the credit count, so a child working toward a bigger reward can see it in the unit that will eventually matter: real pocket money, not an abstract score.
It also gives every price in the app the same footing. If you buy the Reward Ideas add-on, its 50 ready-made suggestions carry costs from 10 to 500 credits, spread across privileges, outings, things, treats, screen time and money itself. Those numbers only mean something to a child once a credit has a value attached, which is the entire job of this setting, and browsing the pack costs nothing even before you decide whether to buy it.
The mechanism
How do you set what a credit is worth?
The setting itself is one number: 1 credit equals X, in your family's own currency. There is no live exchange rate behind it and no network call to fetch one. That is deliberate. A rate that shifts with the market would make yesterday's price for a reward different from today's for no reason a child could ever follow, which defeats the entire point of a system built to feel fair.
To make picking that one number less of a guess, the app ships a suggestion table covering 40 currencies. Each entry is tuned so that a 25-credit reward, the price of the starter ice cream treat, lands near what a small treat actually costs in that currency: rough on purpose, not a live conversion, just an anchor you are free to move up or down once you see how your own child spends.

The tradeoff
Why doesn't the app just fetch a live exchange rate automatically?
Because a live rate would be one more thing pulling data off the device for very little benefit. Reward Study keeps zero third-party SDKs and makes no analytics or tracking calls from inside the app, and a currency API would be an exception to that for a number that does not need to be precise to the cent in the first place.
The cost of that choice is honest: if your currency moves a lot, or the suggestion table's anchor stops matching what things actually cost, you are the one who updates the number, not an automatic feed. In exchange you get a value that never changes underneath a reward your child already priced their week around.
Two households, two rates
Does the credit value stay the same across the whole family?
The setting lives per household, not per child and not globally across the app. A family running two households, for separated parents managing two sets of kids, tasks and rewards, can set a different credit value in each one if the two homes genuinely use different amounts of pocket money, without either household's number leaking into the other.
For most families that never comes up, since one household covers everyone under one roof. But it means the setting was built to be a household decision, agreed once between whoever is running that particular ledger, rather than a single fixed constant baked into the app for every family that installs it. A co-parent invited into an existing household simply inherits whatever value is already set there; nobody has to negotiate it twice for the same children.
